Poll recap: Michigan rises to No. 20 in AP Poll


Michigan basketball rose to No. 20 in Monday’s AP Top 25 Poll.

The Wolverines are coming off two home victories, one being an overtime thriller over Minnesota that included 16 missed free throws, sitting at 19-6.

Michigan rose four spots from last week’s No. 24 ranking. The No. 20 spot is the highest ranking of the season for the maize and blue. Its previous high was No. 23 from the Week 11 poll, following a road win over No. 4 Michigan State.

Who has Michigan beat in the AP Top 25?

The Wolverines have one Top 25 victory: An 82-72 road victory over No. 4 Michigan State.

Michigan has a road win over Texas, who received 15 AP Poll votes, but is not ranked.

Having just one ranked win could affect the team’s seeding come tournament time; though, the defending Big Ten Tournament Champions will have an opportunity to do it again and vastly improve their draw in the NCAA Tournament.

Who has Michigan lost to in the AP Top 25?

Of Michigan’s six losses, four come from Top 25 teams.

John Beilein’s team has lost to No. 3 Purdue twice (by 1 and 4 points), @ No. 14 Ohio State (by 9 points) and @ No. 21 North Carolina (by 15 points).

Nebraska received 4 AP Poll votes, the Huskers beat Michigan by 20 points in Lincoln earlier this season.

Who does Michigan have left on its schedule in the AP Top 25?

Michigan plays No. 14 Ohio State at home Feb. 18.

It blew a 20-point lead earlier this season in Columbus, where the Wolverines inevitably lost by 9 points.

No other teams on the schedule have an AP Poll vote in this week’s poll.

The Big Ten has 4 Top 25 teams in No. 3 Purdue, No. 4 Michigan State, No. 14 Ohio State and No. 20 Michigan.

Michigan’s schedule this week is as follows:

Tuesday: at Northwestern, 7 p.m. EST

Sunday: at Wisconsin, 1 p.m. EST

Michigan defeated Northwestern (14-10, 5-6) 58-47 last week, while it has yet to play the struggling Badgers (10-15, 3-9) this season.

There are six games remaining the 2017-18 regular season.
