Rapid Reaction: Michigan beats Purdue to become back-to-back B1G Tournament champs

Basketball

Michigan (5)?beat the Purdue Boilermakers (3), 75-66, to win back-to-back Big Ten Tournament championships. ??

Michigan and Purdue met for the third time this season, but this time it was for so much more than a regular season win, this time it was a Big Ten Tournament championship.

Third times a charm.

Guarding Isaac Haas

Purdue’s center Isaac Haas has been unguardable.

Still, Head Coach John Beilein elected not to double team the big man. Instead of letting Purdue knock down a ton of jump shots from?past the 3-point line, Michigan would live with Haas getting his down low.

Haas is a beast that had 23 points on 9 of 12 shots.

But Michigan decided to take Haas getting his and it paid off.

Purdue only shot?24 percent?from the 3-point line, and Dakota Mathias, Carsen Edwards, and PJ Thompson combined to be?4 of?15 from beyond the arc.

Jon Teske’s HUGE game

Moe Wagner picked up an early foul, and Jon Teske entered the game. Purdue didn’t know that by drawing a foul on Wagner, they were sealing their fate in the form of Jon Teske.

Isaac Haas was a problem, scoring a team-high 11 points in the first half, Teske was the most obvious choice as a defender. Not only is he the best interior defender on the team, but him playing major minutes to defend Haas keeps Wagner out of foul trouble.?John Beilein made the comment that he was switching out the big men in part to try and contain Haas.

Teske finished with 14 points (6-9), 1 rebound, 2 assists,?1 bock?, and one poster featuring Isaac Haas:

Player of the game – Zavier Simpson

Simpson created so much for the Wolverines in this game.

His stat line was 10 points (4-7), 5 rebounds, 5 assists, with 2 steals?but he had a much bigger impact in this game than his stats show.

The biggest role that Simpson played was locking up Purdue guard Carsen Edwards.

Edwards finished 4 of 16 from the floor.

Quick thoughts

  • Turnover free basketball – The Wolverines the whole first half without having a turnover, and finished with only 5 turnovers.
  • Michigan had?18 assists, Purdue only had 8.
