Jim Harbaugh’s weekly press conference commenced inside Schembechler Hall on Monday afternoon.
Ahead of Michigan’s matchup with SMU, Harbaugh talked about Saturday’s performance, improvement of Tru Wilson, and John Beilein’s scar.
Here’s the best quotes from Monday’s presser.
On Tru Wilson: “Tremendous plus-plus-plus across the board. Recruited, he was going to be a defensive back, then he said he wanted to be a running back, and we don’t dictate what a guy plays … A real inflection point hit around spring ball. He was getting better and better, physically running good, that progressed. His vision got a lot better in camp and he was taking coaching well. He just went straight up … those times stand out most, early spring ball and 8-9 days in training camp.”
On special teams: “Really good. Had the blocked punt and a big punt from Will Hart. Jake Moody, really happy about him. Field goal unit, we’re 1-for-3, so we gotta improve there.”
On LB Noah Furbush: “He’s a very dedicated player. He’s got all of the attributes – size and speed. I’ve been watching for him a few years now, I’ve always thought of Noah Furbush as a guy that could be an NFL player.” Harbaugh added that Furbush won’t be pursuing football after college. He wants to head to the military as a jet pilot, Harbaugh said. He already has a pilot’s license.
On the o-line: “Keep improving, that’s our mindset. Good to see Jalen Mayfield and James Hudson get in the game and do well. Both those players, i want to see them come, and come fast. It’s a race to see how fast they can get up to speed.”
On Dylan McCaffrey: “I felt Dylan did a really good job. On the play he took a sack, it was like Shea’s last week, needed to get rid of the ball.” Harbaugh added that McCaffrey will remain Michigan’s backup ahead of Brandon Peters, the Wolverines presumed starter before Shea Patterson’s transfer.
On Shea Patterson: “We have a lot of trust in Shea.”
On seeing John Beilein at game, following surgery: “Looks great, got a chance to talk to him after the game. He looked like he had a ton of energy, going to be coaching this year. He wouldn’t show me his scar, though … Maybe some other time.”
On Carlo Kemp starting at DT due to Aubrey Solomon injury: “Playing well, really strong … We’ll continue to start Carlo.”
On the receivers: “Feeling that the receivers are doing the things that the receivers need to: First Create Space, then gain separation, and catch the ball. They’re doing it with an assortment of different routes. Feel good about the way they’re ascending.”
