Thursday Recruiting Roundup: Johnson Changes Plans Again

Welcome back to this Thursday’s recruiting roundup. This and every Thursday, The Wolverine Lounge will be here to give you all the latest news in Michigan recruiting.

Here’s this week’s installment:

Johnson Changes Plans Again

Top target, 2020 4-Star TE Theo Johnson (ON.) is still planning on taking his official visit to Ann Arbor this weekend but will be postponing his decision date which was planned for this coming Monday.

This is good news for the Wolverines, as it seemed like Penn State was a slam dunk to land the top player in Canada but pushing back his decision date shows that Michigan could still be in the running.

247Sports Composite ranks Johnson as the No. 95 player overall, the No. 3 TE and the top player in Ontario.

3-Star So Cal Running Back Receives Offer

The Wolverines extended a scholarship offer to 2021 RB Bryon Cardwell (Calif.), the San Diego prospect announced on his Twitter Saturday morning.

Cardwell also has offers from USC, UCLA, and Washington State. He has no Crystal Ball predictions at this time.

The St. Augustine tailback is ranked as the No. 405 player overall in the 2021 class, the No. 30 RB and the No. 29 player in California.

2020 Commit Adds 4th Star

Another Southern California prospect, OT Jeffrey Persi (Calif.) has gone up from a 3-Star prospect to a 4-Star in a recent re-ranking by 247Sports.

The 6-7, 265-pound lineman committed to the Wolverines back in June and is seen as a prospect with an extremely high ceiling despite his relative inexperience at the tackle position.

Persi is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 341 prospect overall, the No. 27 OT and the No. 28 player in California.

Wolverines Offer Fellow JSerra Teammate

One of Persi’s JSerra Catholic fellow offensive lineman, 2021 OG Ross Maseuli (Calif.) received an offer from Michigan and was extremely excited about it.

“I was extremely happy and started to cry inside”, said Maseuli. “When I got the offer everything in my mind just shut down in disbelief. I have worked hard for this and now dreams are starting to come true. This means a lot for me to get a big school offer such as Michigan.”

Could his friendship with Persi pay off for Michigan in the long run? Only time will tell, but those are certainly some strong words from the Southern California player who currently has offers from Arizona and Fresno State. He is not included in the 247Sports Composite rankings at this time.

That is all for this week’s roundup! On Sunday, we will have a recap of all the visitors from this weekend’s showdown with Michigan State.
